Summary: This report evaluates the effectiveness of vegetated highway filter strips in retaining suspended solids and metals in runoff. The authors present results for three test plots constructed and filled with non-soil compost, on-site native soil, and topsoil. Results from the 17-month sampling campaign indicate that vegetated highway shoulders can provide a cost effective method for reducing total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH), metals, and suspended solids.
