Watershed CPR: Restoring Natural, Built and Human Environments
February 19 - 20, 2015
Albuquerque, NM
Click here to go to the conference website

Watershed Health is everyone's concern. Our watersheds are in great need of resuscitation and this year Land & Water Summit will concentrate on learning about ways to improve watershed health. Just as we have learned to recognize signs of illness in our community and provide aid when necessary, so we must learn to recognize the signs of distressed environments and how to cure those ills. This year's Summit will explore options for enhancing watershed management, reducing human impact through the efficient use of water, and illustrating the connections between the watershed and ALL of its inhabitants. Living in a watershed means not only recognizing its limits and assisting in keeping it clean and healthy-it means teaching others to do the same. Join us to discuss ways we can revive our watersheds.

5th Annual One Water Leadership (OWL) Summit
September 15-17, 2014
Kansas City, MO
Click here to go to the conference website

The Clean Water America Alliance will host the fifth annual Urban Water Sustainability Leadership Conference in Kansas City on September 15-17. As a focal point for the national dialogue on resource recovery and green infrastructure, this Leadership Summit has been driving the notion of water as an integrating strategy for the urban environment. Through this Leadership Summit the Council seeks to connect the dots among water, land use, parks, forests, transportation, energy, and other sectors around a goal of revitalizing cities with multi-benefit projects that produce triple bottom-line results.

International Conference on Stormwater and Urban Water Systems Modeling
February 26 and 27, 2014
Toronto, ON Canada
Click here to go to the conference website

The annual International Conference on Stormwater and Urban Water Systems Modeling is a forum for professionals from across North America and overseas to exchange ideas and experience on current practices and emerging technologies. This forum is for engineers, scientists, modelers and administrators involved in water pollution control and water systems design and analysis. Topics include hydrology, hydraulics, water quality and receiving waters, from precipitation processes, runoff, pollutant build-up, washoff, surcharging pipe networks, and water distribution systems, to pollutant removal and impacts on aquatic ecosystems.
This is the 47th annual SWMM Users Group Meeting, the 23rd in the current series of annual Toronto conferences, and the 34th to be held in Canada. The current title reflects a slightly broader interest, including water distribution systems. The atmosphere is relaxed. Presentations are of a high standard. And, by accepting papers up to the last few weeks before the event, a spontaneity is achieved which gives this conference special character.

Bioretention Summit: Ask the Researcher
May 15-16, 2013
Hyatt Arlington @ Washington DC's Key Bridge
Arlington, VA

June 17-18, 2013
The Morton Arboretum
Lisle, IL (outside Chicago)

Overview – Bioretention design, construction, and maintenance continue to evolve as the practice has become the most popular small-site stormwater control measure in much of the United States. However, design standards, construction specifications, and maintenance plans for bioretention often lag behind what recent applied and lab research has discovered. The purpose of this training is to deliver the most up-to-date research-based information that will lead to perhaps dramatic improvements in how bioretention cells are credited by regulators, designed by engineers and landscape architects, and built and maintained by contractors and maintenance personnel.
Below is a sampling of some of the issues to be discussed.

  • Adjusting credit awarded to bioretention installed in sandier soil environments (like the coastal plain and barrier islands)
  • How bioretention cells can be designed to capture larger fractions of water to meet infiltration and evapotranspiration goals
  • The benefits of using an internal water storage layer to enhance performance in many soil types
  • How bioretention designs can be tailored per specific target pollutants, including emerging pollutants such as thermal loads and pathogens
  • What's the best fill media?
  • How can bioretention construction be improved to increase infiltration?
  • Are bioretention devices really low maintenance?

The training is unique because it brings together three prominent bioretention researchers to answer these and more questions. Registrants are encouraged to submit questions in advance to the instructors via the website registration form so that they may be addressed during the workshop.

Continuing Education: Up to 11 Professional Development Hours (PDHs) may be available for professional engineers and land surveyors, and landscape architects. Attendees may appeal to their respective boards to obtain professional education credits.

Who Should Attend
Stormwater Administrators and Managers, Public Works Officials, Engineers, Landscape Architects, Planners, Regulators/Government Officials

Instructors
  • Bill Hunt, PhD, PE, D.WRE, Assoc. Professor and Extension Specialist, Dept. of Biological & Agricultural Engineering, NC State University
