The LID Center is working on a multi-phase water quality retrofit project at EPA Headquarters in Washington , D.C. The goal of this project is to gain Leadership in Environment and Energy Design (LEED) certification and to demonstrate the feasibility of retrofitting highly urbanized areas with distributed stormwater controls. This includes a comprehensive master plan of the 12-acre complex to plan for the long-term retrofit of the facility with environmental controls. The project has required the location of and coordination with utility, property, and topographic surveys. The age and complexity of the infrastructure made this an especially complicated task. The Center prepared construction documents for the first phase of construction. This included
calculations and details on cisterns, bioretention cells, bio-soils, infiltration cells, permeable concrete, permeable pavers, recycled materials, low-volume sprinkler heads, soil amendments, and geogrids. The Center prepared exhibits and presentations to the National Capital Planning Commission and the Commission of Fine Arts, and developed internet sites and exhibits on the project.
