The LID Center has been working on numerous small- and large-scale retrofit projects at the Washington Navy Yard since 2000. This includes comprehensive LID master planning, site plans, hydrologic and hydraulic analysis, permit and project management, development of Operations and Maintenance (O and M) manuals, and monitoring. Because of the potential for contaminated soils at the Navy Yard, the Center had to develop specialized liners and drainage devices to ensure that the surrounding soils would not contaminate the stormwater effluent. The Center provided Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC) for the construction and worked with several vendors in the development of new technologies and construction techniques for the project. As part of this effort, the Center is working with Howard University under a §319 grant to monitor the LID facilities. This work included the design of monitoring facilities. The Center has also prepared several fact sheets and outreach materials and has organized and conducted community events for demonstrations and planting.
