Friends of the Potomac is convening a series of seven “Potomac River Forums” starting in 2004. Funding is provided by the National Park Service through the American Heritage River Initiative. The goal is to foster the exchange of ideas, techniques, case studies, and strategies on topics such as green infrastructure techniques, river conservation, recreation and access, funding, volunteerism, land use and stewardship within the Potomac River basin . Topical discussions will provide information on trends and patterns in growth and development, sources of financial and technical information and assistance, and innovative land conservation and development techniques.
The series began on February 9, 2004 , with a forum on “Innovative Urban Stormwater Management.” More than sixty local practitioners, developers, and stormwater experts came to hear Toby Tourbier from the Technical University of Dresden and Neil Weinstein from the Low Impact Development Center speak about constructed wetlands in residential development and decentralized stormwater management. On April 13, the second forum will be held on “International Best Practices and the Potomac River Basin ”. Ambassador Richard Swett and Northern Virginia Regional Commission Exec. Director Mark Gibb will address how open space planning, green design, and other environmental policies from abroad have helped to shape and improve the health of the Potomac watershed.
