Plant Lists Choosing Plants Design Guidelines Spacing & Sizing

Rain Garden Choosing Plants

Links

The Chesapeake Watershed is comprised of several different hardiness zones and three physiographic provinces. Plants for rain gardens should be selected for appropriateness to the garden’s hardiness zone. There are several different plant lists available for rain gardens in a variety of locations. Many of the lists highlight natives for different geographic areas. Native flora have coevolved with native fauna and choosing native species will help to support that native fauna. However, non-native ornamental cultivars that are not invasive are also acceptable plant choices.

In addition to choosing plants which are generally suited to your location, plant selection is also based on the moisture and exposure conditions in the planting area. Determining the cultural conditions for your plants will allow you to select a garden template and make appropriate substitutions from the plant lists that are available. The garden templates are set up to anticipate hardiness, exposure and moisture regimes.
