1. |
Drill a hole 1 to 1-1/2 from
the bottom of the barrel. Use 3/4 drill bit.
|
|
2. |
Screw the 1/2" PVC male
adapter into the hole. Unscrew the adapter and then
wrap the threads with plumbers goop. Screw the
adapter back into the hole and let it dry. Attach the
garden hose to the adapter.
|
|
3. |
Cut overflow fitting near the
top of the barrel. Use 1-5/8 hole saw. Place the
1-1/4 male threaded coupling through the hole. It is
helpful to wrap the threads with waterproof sealant.
Screw the 1-1/4 female barbed fitting from the
outside of the barrel onto the male threaded coupling.
Attach the drain hose.

|
4. |
Drill a 1/2 pilot hole in the
center on top of the barrel. Cut around the 1/2 hole
using the router, jig or coping saw. Cut a hole the
same diameter as the atrium grate (i.e. 4). Do not
make the hole too big as the grate should fit securely
to filter large debris. Attach a mesh screen to the
inside of the grate to filter small, fine debris and
prevent mosquitoes from breeding. Place the atrium
grate into the hole with the basket facing down.
|
|
5. |
Cut a notch at the top of the
barrel rim. The notch will hold the hose when not in
use. The notch will provide a place to hold the 3/4" x
1/2" PVC male adapter on the end of the watering hose
when it is not in use. Use 1/2 drill bit.
|
|
6. |
Place the barrel on concrete
blocks to ensure that water will flow from the hose.
It will take 4 concrete blocks to get the barrel
approximately 12-16 in. off the ground.
|
|
7. |
Cut the existing downspout
with a hack saw. Connect the newly cut end piece to
the existing downspout using the vinyl gutter elbow.
(see image) The end of the downspout should be placed
on top of the barrel.
