Students > Exploration Topics > Source Water

Welcome!

As a young scientist and researcher you must begin by defining the problem. The questions and comments provided below can be used as guidance.
You are encouraged to refer to the scientific method in developing your research project.
Please remember that your project is not only a chance to reinforce the skills you learn in the classroom, but it is also an opportunity to educate your peers and the community on issues related to water quality.
Notice the Related Activities link to the right. They are designed to provide a guided experience and assist you in developing your own research ideas.

Topic: Source Water

Conduct surveys of local officials in your community.

What is the population of your community? (census.gov)  How has it changed over time?

Where does your drinking water come from?  Are there several sources?  What percentage of the population uses the same source that you and your school community use?

Where does the stormwater runoff go?

Where does your wastewater go?

Where do people go for water recreation?  (lakes, rivers)  Where are these places located in relation to wastewater treatment plants? (link to mapping)

What can you do at school/home to conserve water?

Draw a picture illustrating the water cycle. (link to example image)

Write a poem/song describing what water means to you.

Design a logo illustrating what water means to you.  Consider placing the logo on a t-shirt to sell and raise money for school habitat project funds.
